Keynote Speakers
The Keynote Speakers in 2010 will provide a diverse perspective on contemporary redesign and Lean Thinking concepts as they apply to healthcare. Speakers of the Summit will include:
Robert Middleton, NHS, UK
Rob Middleton is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Service Improvement Specialist, with a proven track record in leading and achieving rapid change in healthcare. He graduated from Cambridge University and completed his medical training at Guy’s Hospital, London. He then received his orthopaedic training at The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore before being awarded and completing an AO International Trauma Fellowship in Switzerland, and a King’s Fund Fellowship to study in Australia. For the last ten years he has worked as an Orthopaedic and trauma surgeon at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, England. Over more recent years he has successfully led and delivered a complete system transformation in his role as clinical lead of the Derwent centre. The Derwent is a high quality, high volume joint replacement unit based on the principles of lean, control of variation, and best clinical practice. The success of the Derwent led to Rob’s appointment to the post of National Clinical Lead in Hip and Knee Replacement at the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement in 2008.
John Shook, Senior Advisor, Lean Enterprise Institute, USA
A senior advisor to the Lean Enterprise Institute, John Shook is recognised as a true mentor who enthusiastically shares his knowledge and insights within the Lean Community. John learned about Lean management while working for Toyota for nearly 11 years in Japan and the U.S.A. As co-author of Learning to See, John helped introduce the world to value-stream mapping. John also co-authored Kaizen Express, a bi-lingual manual of the essential concepts and tools of the Toyota Production System. In his latest book Managing to Learn, he describes the A3 management process at the heart of Lean management and leadership. John now spends most of his time helping companies and the Lean community learning Lean management. He now supports University of Michigan Hospital in their Lean transformational effort. John is committed to supporting the development of Lean healthcare in Australasia and this will be his 4th year of participation. Welcome back John!
John Toussaint, ThedaCare, USA
John S. Toussaint, MD, is CEO emeritus of ThedaCare, and CEO of the newly-launched ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value. The Center’s mission is to create a healthcare marketplace that rewards providers for delivering value measured in terms of best quality at the lowest cost to their customers. Dr. Toussaint served as president and chief executive officer of ThedaCare, Inc. from March 2000 until April 2008. During his tenure at ThedaCare, he introduced the ThedaCare Improvement System (TIS), which is based on the Toyota Production System. The culture of continuous improvement has allowed ThedaCare to reduce patient errors, improve outcomes and deliver better quality care. The ThedaCare improvement system has saved ThedaCare $25 million. John attended the summit in 2008 and has a strong message for senior clinicians, executives and senior policy & health planners.
